Tilda Swinton Transforms Christie’s Paris into a Cinematic Stage for Marianna Kennedy’s Creations, Blending Tradition with Modernity in Supersonic Mediaeval.

From May 5 to 11, Christie’s Paris will host Supersonic Mediaeval, an exhibition curated by Tilda Swinton that transforms the galleries into a theatrical set for Marianna Kennedy’s creations. Known for her carved and gilded mirrors, bronze and lacquer pieces, and the “Workshop” series, Kennedy’s work reinterprets historical craftsmanship through a contemporary lens. The exhibition is a tribute to the timeless quality of her pieces, blending art and design with a focus on meticulous handcraft.

The title Supersonic Mediaeval reflects Swinton’s admiration for Kennedy’s work – an interplay of tradition and modernity. Swinton’s scenography, inspired by London’s Spitalfields neighborhood, invites visitors to move freely through a cinematic experience that captures the essence of Kennedy’s universe. The exhibition highlights how Kennedy’s practice bridges the past and present, transforming traditional techniques with vibrant resin, wood, Murano glass, and mercury glass. Each piece, whether a mirror, lamp, or lacquer object, embodies a balance between artistry and functionality.

Kennedy’s journey began in Spitalfields in 2006, with her first significant exhibition held at Galerie Chastel-Marechal in Paris in 2011. Her creations echo the legacies of Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Armand-Albert Rateau, Jean Dunand, and Eileen Gray – artists renowned for their sophisticated approaches to bronze and lacquer works. The collaboration with Tilda Swinton extends beyond mere curation, presenting Kennedy’s pieces as actors on a stage, each poised to tell a story of craftsmanship and innovation.

The exhibition, organized by PLVR Zurich, is part of Christie’s ongoing commitment to showcasing contemporary creativity. Following the success of past exhibitions with Pierre Bonnefille, Mathieu Lehanneur, and Elie Top, Supersonic Mediaeval reaffirms Christie’s role in promoting the dialogue between past and present in the world of collectible design. By presenting Kennedy’s works in this context, Swinton offers a fresh perspective on the intersection of art and design, making Supersonic Mediaeval not just an exhibition but a narrative that celebrates the enduring power of craftsmanship.
