October 7, 2024

Judd Foundation and MACK release the first comprehensive archive of Donald Judd’s iconic furniture designs.

For the first time, Donald Judd’s groundbreaking furniture designs have been compiled into a single comprehensive archive. Donald Judd Furniture, released by the Judd Foundation and MACK, spans over two decades of the celebrated artist’s work and offers a rare look at the evolution of his vision. The book showcases more than one hundred pieces conceived for Judd’s living and working spaces in New York, Texas, and Switzerland. Remarkably, all the furniture featured in the book remains in production today.

Edited by Flavin Judd, Donald Judd’s son, the publication offers an in-depth exploration of Judd’s design philosophy. Featuring newly commissioned perspective and elevation drawings, archival sketches by Judd, and vibrant color photography, the book captures the essence of his furniture within the iconic environments he created.

Judd’s designs were initially conceived during the renovation of his home and studio at 101 Spring Street in New York City. Later, they expanded to furnish the vast architectural spaces of Marfa, Texas. These furniture pieces exemplify Judd’s renowned commitment to directness of form and functionality, blending artistry with unadorned practicality.

In addition to its rich visual content, Donald Judd Furniture includes two essays by Judd, an insightful interview, and detailed notes on materials and construction. This comprehensive volume not only surveys a central aspect of Judd’s work but also highlights his critical engagement with design in a mass-production context, offering readers a deeper understanding of his lasting influence.

Donald Judd (1928–1994) was a pioneering figure in 20th-century art and design. Known for transitioning from painting to three-dimensional work, Judd’s innovative thinking influenced art, architecture, and design worldwide. His writings addressed the intersections of art practice, architecture, and lived experience, further enriching his legacy.

The Judd Foundation, co-publisher of the book, remains committed to preserving and sharing Judd’s vision. Through this publication, they provide a rare opportunity to engage with Judd’s design ethos and understand his transformative impact on the relationship between form and function.

Donald Judd Furniture, edited by Flavin Judd, invites readers to explore the enduring relevance of his designs, which continue to shape contemporary conversations in art and design. As the first comprehensive archive of his furniture, this book offers a deeper understanding of Judd’s evolution as a designer and his lasting contribution.

The book is available through MACK.
